The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation assisted with the care and preservation of our island cemetery. A vital part of Daufuskie Island Gullah culture was providing a proper burial for loved ones, with cemeteries traditionally placed next to moving water. This honors the Gullah belief that the soul would travel home to Africa via the water. This particular site borders the Cooper River and contains grave markers dating as early as 1917, though the cemetery itself serves as a continuous link back to the island's plantation days.

The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation facilitated a key partnership between the Melrose POA and the First Union African Baptist Church to support the development of the Edmondson Ministry Building. Named in honor of the island's longtime spiritual leadership, this central gathering place serves as a vital hub for community meetings, outreach, and connection. It reflects the enduring role of faith and service in bringing neighbors together with a shared purpose.

Following years of community dedication, the Daufuskie Island Community Foundation successfully secured a South Carolina state grant and spearheaded additional fundraising to establish the Frances Jones Community Park. Today, the park serves as a central gathering place for locals and visitors to enjoy the island's natural splendor. Featuring the Daufuskie Island Trail, a playground, a dog park, and a pavilion, it stands as a testament to what Islanders can achieve through shared vision and hard work.

The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation was proud to support the Daufuskie Community Farm during its foundational fundraising stage. Since 2010, this volunteer-led non-profit has been a passionate advocate for sustainable living. What began as a hands-on way to produce local food has grown into a thriving community hub. Through the dedicated planning and labor of local residents, the farm has expanded from its initial livestock roots into flourishing gardens, orchards, and a vibrant Artisan Village.

The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation spearheaded fundraising efforts to provide critical equipment for the Daufuskie Island Fire District. Operating from a single station, the district relies on a dedicated team of 12 full-time firefighters and five volunteers to provide essential fire suppression and rescue services. By helping to modernize their gear and resources, we ensure that our first responders — along with Beaufort County EMS — are equipped to protect the lives and property of everyone on the island.

To support the preservation and continued use of the Mary Field School, the Daufuskie Island Community Foundation acted as a vital financial conduit for diverse funding sources. This iconic 1930s schoolhouse — the setting of Pat Conroy's teaching legacy — remains a cornerstone of island life. By facilitating the transition from a historic educational site to a home for thriving local artisans and small businesses, we are helping to ensure this piece of Gullah history continues to serve the community in new and meaningful ways.

On an island without a hospital, every second counts. The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation, in partnership with Beaufort County, recently sponsored three Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and placed them in strategic locations across the island — at Francis Jones Park, the Beach Road beach access, and the original County dock. These life-saving devices ensure that no matter where an emergency strikes, help is within reach. Because on Daufuskie, we look out for one another.

On an island without bridges, access to education shouldn't require a two-hour daily ferry and bus ride. The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation proudly helped fund the launch of the Daufuskie Island Independent School — a groundbreaking middle school that opened in 2023 and brings high-quality education right to the island's doorstep. Using the island itself as a living classroom, DIIS integrates marine science, environmental stewardship, and community connection into every aspect of learning. We believed in this school from the beginning, because investing in our children is investing in Daufuskie's future.

Every summer, Daufuskie Island's beaches come alive with one of nature's most remarkable events — sea turtle nesting season. The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation proudly supported the Daufuskie Island Turtle Patrol, a dedicated group of volunteers who work tirelessly to monitor and protect nesting sites, ensuring these ancient creatures have a safe haven to call home. Because on Daufuskie, we take care of all our residents — even the ones with flippers.

Life on a remote island comes with unique challenges — and sometimes, those challenges are deeply personal. The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation is committed to meeting residents where they are. When a community member faces a medical or humanitarian need, they simply reach out — and the Foundation does its best to help. No red tape, no waiting. Just neighbors taking care of neighbors, the way it's always been done on Daufuskie.

When Hurricane Matthew swept through, the Daufuskie Island Community Foundation didn't wait — it got to work. The Foundation purchased chain saws, generators, and gasoline to help clear the way forward, and provided funds for heavy equipment rentals to tackle what hand tools couldn't. This is what community looks like — neighbors helping neighbors, making sure Daufuskie Island rises together.

The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation is proud to support local healthcare through a donation to the Volunteers in Medicine Daufuskie Island Satellite Office. This contribution is dedicated to the purchase of a new EKG machine, significantly enhancing the medical services available right here on our island, and ensuring that residents have access to essential heart monitoring and screenings.

When Hurricane Matthew struck, it took an army of dedicated workers to help Daufuskie Island recover. The Daufuskie Island Community Foundation made sure those heroes were taken care of — providing food, water, vaccinations, and payments to the cleanup crews who worked tirelessly to restore our beloved island. Because taking care of our community means taking care of the people who show up when it matters most.
